EDUCATING THE PUBLIC

Many, many years ago, I started to train with a master of Working Service ä Training. He was very much against me working with the public. He felt the caliber of dog he bred and trained where best suited for military and specialized law enforcement application. I felt, after seeing so many people get discouraged with their dogs, that the training we did could bring them together and help them communicate better with their dogs. Now, although I cannot say I wish I had never worked with the public, I can say that now more than ever the public has to be educated. I am not suggesting that what I do is right and what everyone else does is wrong. What I am suggesting is that anyone, anywhere, anytime that suggests that Schutzhund or sporting dogs are working dogs and should be considered a valuable asset in saving your lives, are lying to you.

I have seen recently new training facilities rise up and make statements that intertwine my words and our training methods into their sales pitch. This although being the greatest form of flattery, really disturbs me when they use terms like "behavior modification", "re-imprinting" and "re-training". Some also claim the best dogs are in Europe. That is why they import a dog, with sporting foundation and then sell them to save your life. This is wrong. The best dogs are not in Europe. That is lie number one. If you fall for this one, the rest is easy for you to swallow.

The United States of America has always been the world's leader in combat techniques, security, and after the war, the holder of both the best and the worst of the working breeds. I am hoping that all of the nonsense put forward by the dog jockeys and importers will cause the sleeping giant in all of us to awaken.

Law enforcement agencies are import sporting dogs from Europe. By doing this you pass up the small neighborhood breeder who takes such pride in his dogs and care of his litters, to put money in the hands of those who have pulled the wool over your eyes. Stay away from any agency that does not at least look stateside for their dogs first. It has become more important to have a dog with pink papers, than to have a good dog with no papers. If we took all the successful imports on the street in America and all the failures or loose cannons, it would take a box car to accommodate the later and a Volkswagen to house the first. When someone attempts to change over a sporting dog to a service dog, they are admitting, a sporting dog is not a true working dog. All of the loose foundation is present and remains so.

I am making these statements so that each and every one of you that reads this will do your homework. Don't take my word. Look around. Test the theories. You will find that unless your attacker challenges you with a Schutzarm or bite sleeve, he is in no danger of being bitten. All of the training done on full body bite suit or muzzle with a sporting dog is useless and although I will not say why here so the bad guys can find out. I will say any of you who challenge me on this statement simply have to bring your dog here to me. Then we will put you up on the net so people will know if I am right or I am wrong. I honestly hope someone comes forward.

Remember a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. When civilians with no military training start to use military terminology to describe training techniques of which they know nothing about. This is dangerous. The real world of rock and roll, down and dirty, covert activities will know them as charlatans. Unfortunately the innocent will not. One trainer suggests you should alert (have your dog bark out aggressively) your dog on people approaching on the street and knocking on your door at home. Then fake that you are correcting him for coming out and then tell them he has already bit somebody to put fear into an already confused individual. The damage and the lack of stability in such a dog is unimaginable. A real service dog is not a vicious, unmannerly animal and will indicate when necessary and will target and forewarn of an attacker only when the situation dictates. The truth is when all things are working you don't have to play the fool and pretend.

Just think in a time when so much legislation is being passed to not only ban protection dogs or working dogs but to move toward forced breed extinction, a trainer would actually give advice to people, that causes these noble creature to look like a vicious unruly animal. This advice in turn, causing fear and deepening the misconception of what a true working dog is.

You see you cannot take a Schutzhund dog and from him create a working dog. Schutzhund is a sport, a game, a competition. Not work. Sporting dogs are not working dogs. It has always amused me how sporting people want to call their dogs, working dogs and yet handlers of working dogs have no desire to refer to their dogs as sporting dogs. The reason for this is obvious. Working dogs are content to be known by their handlers for what they are. The fact that the German Shepherd's Dog was once a Working Breed does sadly today not mean that all members of this once noble breed meet that criteria. It is more important today than ever before that those of us that breed for true workability become more vocal than those set on destroying the breeds entirely. It is not easy perhaps. I feel that by informing people of the truth, they have enough common sense to make their own judgements. As I said in the beginning I am not flattered to see my terms and my words rewritten and used by others. I am angered by the fact they threaten the security and safety of unsuspecting innocent people by their lies and the irreversible damage they can cause to the already poor opinion of our great working breeds.
